The decision was not exactly ambiguous. On Tuesday, Eric himself sent the official ruling: “we’ll have this as the official call for a special 4:00 o’clock (eastern) waiver wire tomorrow.”

Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell the website.

Or Eric forgot to tell the website.

Or perhaps Eric told the website something completely different.

Whatever happened, at approximately noon, the Masters League free-agency machine fired up.

Scott Sauri was apparently the first to discover the disaster.

“Yo. It looks like free agency ran at noon today. I didn’t set it to do that? Eric?”

That was 12:12 PM.

Two minutes later, the commissioner entered crisis mode.

“oh snap, we said 4 oclock didn’t we…..sorry about that I jumped the gun”

And then came the most important administrative instruction in QSN history:

“NO ONE LOOK AT THE SITE”

It was already too late.

The League Has Been Compromised

The problem with accidentally running free agency two hours early is that, in fantasy football, people tend to notice when players suddenly appear on rosters.

Scott did.

At 10:24 AM, before the full scope of the catastrophe was known, he reported that he was going into the system to make claims and discovered that half the players he was looking at were suddenly on rosters.

Jay McDowell then confirmed he had been planning to make his claims by 4:00.

In other words, the league had not merely moved free agency.

It had moved free agency into a period when some managers were at work, some were in meetings, and apparently nobody had been told.

Niklas Boman summed up the feeling of the Masters membership perfectly:

“Wait all our bids are gone now? I’m in an all day work meeting. This stinks.”

This was no longer a waiver wire.

This was an emergency.

The Rollback

Fortunately, Scott Sauri appeared to possess the one skill every fantasy commissioner needs in a crisis: the ability to reverse whatever Eric had just done.

At 1:40 PM, Scott announced:

“I reversed all the impacted transactions and reset free agency to 4:00 PM ET.”

Crisis solved.

Probably.

Except now everyone had another problem: what happened to the original claims?

Eric explained that he had recorded them.

This sounds reassuring until you read the next sentence.

“I have all the claims recorded, in case someone attempts trickey.”

There was only one problem.

The claims were on Eric’s computer.

At home.

Eric might be away from a computer until 4.

So the league was now relying on a handwritten—or, more accurately, Eric-recorded—backup of claims that had been processed by a free-agency run that was never supposed to happen in the first place.

And Then Came the Defense Question

As if the commissioner-induced waiver apocalypse wasn’t enough, Tom Lombardi eventually entered the discussion with a question that somehow made the entire situation even more Masters-like:

“Is it a Masters thing that all defenses get swallowed up in the draft?”

Nobody knows.

Nobody can explain it.

At this point, we’re not even sure the defenses know what league they’re in.

The Origin Story: How Did We Get Here?

The truly beautiful part of this fiasco is that the league had spent considerable time discussing the timing the day before.

Niklas asked whether waivers should run before Wednesday’s kickoff.

Eric said they could run normally without the Hawks or Patriots available—or potentially run that night or Wednesday at noon if everyone was aware of the change.

Then Will Erat said:

“Let’s do tomorrow at noon”

Jay responded:

“That’s really early, how about 4 ET”

And Eric eventually issued the official call for 4 PM Eastern.

So, to recap:

Noon was discussed.

4 PM was selected.

4 PM was officially announced.

Free agency ran at noon.

This is the kind of organizational efficiency that makes the Masters the Masters.

The Commissioner Has a Defense

To Eric’s credit, he immediately admitted the mistake.

There was no attempt to blame Fantrax.

No attempt to blame Scott.

No attempt to blame daylight saving time.

Just:

“oh snap, we said 4 oclock didn’t we…..sorry about that I jumped the gun”

That’s accountability.

The fact that the gun was apparently loaded with everyone’s waiver claims is a separate issue.

Eric also asked the most reasonable question possible once the damage was discovered:

“Before I try to fix this….is there anyone who wanted to make a claim and didn’t?”

That question is essentially the fantasy-football equivalent of a bank teller asking, “Did anyone have money in here before we accidentally burned down the bank?”

Masters Privilege

The irony is that this league had already spent the previous several days debating roster moves, contract irregularities, transition tags, cuts, and whether certain transactions needed to be reversed.

Eric had even floated the concept of “Masters privilege” when discussing questionable last-minute moves.

There was also a warning to owners to check their contracts before the auction because any problems discovered afterward would be at their expense.

So naturally, the most consequential administrative mistake of the week was not a contract.

It was the commissioner accidentally hitting the waiver-wire launch button six hours ahead of schedule.

The Final Verdict

As of the afternoon, the official ruling appears to be:

Free agency is back at 4:00 PM ET.

The erroneous transactions were reversed.

The original claims were reportedly recorded.

Some managers may have been unable to submit claims because they were working or otherwise unavailable.

Eric may need to recreate the claims from his records.

And everyone is once again expected to pretend this is a normal fantasy-football league.

The Masters has always prided itself on being different.

Most leagues have commissioners who send reminders.

The Masters has a commissioner who accidentally launches free agency six hours early, tells everyone “NO ONE LOOK AT THE SITE,” reverses the transactions, searches for witnesses, preserves the evidence, and then discovers that his backup copy of the claims is sitting on a computer at home.

And honestly?

Would we want it any other way?

Free agency is scheduled for 4 PM.

Assuming, of course, nobody tells Eric what time it is.

There are few things more sacred in the QSN than a clearly established free-agency time.
